Using ADDIE in Digital Learning Projects

ADDIE is one of the most familiar frameworks in instructional design. It stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation.

For me, ADDIE is useful because it gives structure to a learning project. It helps ensure that a module is not created only because content is available, but because there is a clear learning need behind it.

Analysis

The first step is understanding the problem.

Before building an eLearning module, I usually try to clarify:

  • Who are the learners?
  • What problem needs to be solved?
  • What should learners be able to do after the training?
  • What constraints exist in the workplace?
  • How will the learning result be measured?

This step helps prevent the project from becoming just a digital version of a document.

Design

In the design stage, the learning flow starts to take shape.

This can include learning objectives, module structure, storyboard, interaction ideas, quiz strategy, visual direction, and LMS delivery plan.

The goal is to create a clear blueprint before development begins.

Development

Development is where the learning asset is built.

For digital learning, this may involve tools like Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, Canva, Figma, video tools, or LMS authoring features.

At this stage, the challenge is balancing content accuracy, visual clarity, interaction quality, and technical compatibility.

Implementation

Implementation is not only about uploading a module to the LMS.

It also includes setting enrollments, communication, access testing, device testing, reporting setup, and user support preparation.

A good implementation process makes it easier for learners to access the module and for admins to manage it.

Evaluation

Evaluation helps answer whether the learning solution worked.

This can include completion data, quiz results, learner feedback, stakeholder feedback, and observations from operations.

Evaluation is also the bridge to improvement. A digital learning project should not stop after publishing. It should be reviewed and improved based on real usage.

Closing thought

ADDIE does not have to be rigid. It can be used as a practical guide.

For digital learning projects, I see ADDIE as a way to connect learning needs, design decisions, development work, LMS implementation, and continuous improvement.
